What is Athletic Training?

The objective of the Athletic Training Program is to provide the highest level of service to the student-athletes at Diamond Bar High School. This includes the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as well as helping to direct the nutritional, physiological, and psychological needs of the student-athlete. The care provided by the Athletic Trainer will be delivered with objectivity and a conscientious blend of concern for the healing of the athlete’s body and mind.

The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), with the consultation and direction of physicians, is an integral part of the health care system associated with physical activity and sports. The Athletic Trainer at Diamond Bar High School has the full responsibility for the operational procedures of the athletic training room. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Prevention
2. Evaluation and assessment
3. Immediate care
4. Treatment, rehabilitation, and recognition
5. Organization and administration
6. Professional development

Athletic Training Students (ATS) have varying responsibilities depending on their skill level and progression through the program. All athletic training students are directly responsible to the ATC and are required to stay within the established limitations of their level clinical skill competency.

Athletic Training Students must be under the direct visual supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer when assisting with any athletic training services. Coaches and school administrators must not allow or expect ATSs to act independently with regards to the evaluation, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. Additionally, it is paramount that ATSs not be expected, asked or permitted to make “return to play” decisions. Specifically, ATSs must not engage in the following activities:

1. Interpreting referrals from other healthcare providers (MD, DO)
2. Performing evaluations without prior instruction from the ATC
3. Making decisions about treatments, procedures or activities
4. Planning patient care
5. Independently providing athletic training services during team travel
