    • IB diploma candidates must select one subject from each of the six subject groups;
    • a second subject from groups 3 or 4 may be substituted for a subject in group 6;
    • three IB subjects must be taken at the higher level (HL), and three are taken at the standard level (SL).
      • A student is also permitted to take 4 HL and 2 SL courses.
    • A student is only permitted to complete a maximum of two SL courses during junior year.
  • Complete the core elements:
    • the extended essay, a personal research paper;
    • the Theory of Knowledge, a senior seminar course designed to connect all of the disciplines;
    • CAS, a student action requirement that requires extra-curricular work in the areas of creativity, activity, and service. IB students must meet 7 learning outcomes with their CAS projects.

All of the above must be done during the students' junior and senior years.

---------------------------------------------------
DBHS IB Prep students and DP candidates are expected to maintain a high level of academic achievement.
FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES:
All students in DBHS IB prep must maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average in the Groups 1-5 academic courses—to be reviewed every semester. In addition, DBHS IB Prep students must meet the prerequisites for the necessary prep and IB courses.

JUNIORS:
Prep sophomores who wish to continue in the IB program must formally declare their intention in early March of their sophomore year. Upon completion of a diploma candidate declaration, all prep students who meet the prerequisites for the IB courses and have cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 and above in the courses from IB subject groups 1-5 will automatically continue into the IB Diploma Program. Any student with a grade point average below 3.0 and any student who does not meet any IB course prerequisite will not be able to continue.
---------------------------------------------------
During the four years of high school, students must take the following courses in order to graduate. These are the graduation requirements that are not also required of our IB diploma program. These courses must be considered when developing a four-year plan.
  • Physical Education: 4 semesters during grades 9 and 10
  • Social Science: US History (1 year), Civics (1 semester), Economics (1 semester)
  • Health: 1 semester
  • Applied Arts: 3 semesters of vocational or creative art must include a course that demonstrates computer literacy.
In addition, the University of California and the California State University entrance requirements include a one-year course in the visual or performing arts.

What is an IB Course Candidate?
An IB Course Candidate is anyone choosing to take one or more (no limit) IB Courses and sits for those exams. A student might choose to be an IB Course Candidate because completing an IB course and passing the assessments could earn them credit for a college course.
